Digital technologies and multimedia interaction are increasingly utilized to produce, enhance, and innovate theatrical production. Students examine and experiment with various digital technologies as they relate to theater and dance performance. Students create digital audio, video, design rendering, and animation projects for theatrical performances. Evans.

Topic for Fall 2010:
THTR 290: Topics in Performance: Creating a Play (3). Enrollment limited to 12 students. Participants in this hands-on course create the dramatic script for Lexington’s Letters to the Editor, a play that will be staged by W&L’s Theater Department in Spring 2011. Students creatively organize, edit, and juxtapose the selected letters to the editor of the News-Gazette (1804 to present), creating a theatrical collage that honors the diversity and local history of Lexington, Virginia. Students with interests in the fields of theater, journalism, and history find ample opportunity to explore their artistic and research skills. No practical theater or creative writing experience necessary. Jew.

Topic for Spring 2011:
THTR 296: Motion Picture Screenwriting (4). An introductory study in modern writing for visual media, including the story structure of film, the unique format for writing in the discipline, and the elements of plot and character development. Writing and reading assignments as well as film screenings are required. The course culminates in the composition and reading of a screenplay for a short film. (HA) Dean

Prerequisites: Junior standing and permission of the instructor. Participation in a university theater production for a minimum of 50 hours. A journal recording the production process is required. Staff.

Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor. A study of the practice of stage lighting, focusing on styles of production, historical methods and artistic theory. Culminates in a light design for a public theatrical production. Lab fee required. Evans.
