The course stresses laboratory techniques including maintenance of sterility and culture conditions, use of laminar flow hood, phase contrast microscopy and photomicroscopy, preparation and contents of a variety of media, cryogenic storage of cells, indirect immunofluorescence, monoclonal antibodies, and biochemical characterizations of cell specific markers.

Prerequisite: Senior Status In this course emphasis is placed on literature searches, computerized searches, design of research papers and the preparation of bibliographies. At the conclusion of this course, students should have: (1) a concise, specific research topic; (2) a set of goals and objectives for the selected topic; (3) a completed literature search; and (4) an approved written research proposal in which the student has defended via oral presentation.

This course is a systematic presentation of the field concerning the demographic, health, and cultural factors in the aging process. This course reviews the changing position, roles, and social adjustment of individuals in later stages of the life cycle, including the impact of the elderly on social, economic, and political structures.
