Consists of a global study of the developing Third World with particular emphasis on rural populations, subsistence farmers, indigenous groups and small entrepreneurs. Focuses on development and globalization while providing insights into the peasantry as a class, women in peasant societies, changes in peasant societies and the peasantry as a player in the policies of the modern state.

The course includes a rigorous evaluation of the internship experience based on learning objectives stipulated in a contract between the student, faculty adviser and a field supervisor.
