Focuses on the historical roots of each issue or problem, its present-day impact on individuals and communities, and Native American responses. Topics may include restoration and preservation of community and culture, treaty rights, sovereignty, and self-sufficiency. May be applied to the Native American studies and Latin American studies minors. Prerequisite(s): ANTH 213 or SOC 204 .

    Analyzes theory and research on the social production and maintenance of gender. Includes gender role socialization, concepts of femininity and masculinity, and the construction of gender in family, work, popular culture, and other social institutions. Addresses the impact of race and class on experiences of gender. Considers how feminist and men’s movements have influenced changes in gender relations. May be applied to the women’s studies minor. Approved for University Studies (Integration). Prerequisite(s): SOC 204 .

    Explores how bodies are gendered in social contexts with an emphasis on U.S. society and Western culture. May include, but is not limited to, an exploration of women’s and men’s body images, identities, relationships with food and eating, health and healthcare, sexualities, (dis)abilities, bodies and sports, commodification, reproduction, deviant bodies, transgendered bodies, and intersexuality. Examines gendered bodies as expressions of the self and of society, as objects of social control, and as sites of resistance and transformation. May be applied to the women’s studies minor.     Provides students with an essential background for understanding the interaction of religion and politics in the Middle East. Explores the cultural and historical context in which political Islam emerged. Analyzes Islam both in theory and practice and its effect on political, individual, and family social domains. Specific topics and issues may include tensions between tradition and modernity in the context of human rights and democracy, the role of women, the Salman Rushdie case, and coverage of Islam in Western media. Prerequisite(s): SOC 204 .
