3 credits Study and practice of newsgathering and writing of 'straight' objective news stories. Discussions center on concept of news and news value, ethics, interviewing and traditional journalism methods and standards as practiced by established American newspapers.

3-12 credits Prerequisite: Instructor approval. J216 for reporters, ART 221, 222, 223 for graphic artists, and ART261 and J216 for photographers is highly recommended. This course provides the student with journalism-related work experience in reporting, page design and photography on print publications. The student will have the opportunity to integrate theory and practice gained in the classroom with practical experience in the professional world. In this course a student may develop skills, explore career options and network with professionals and employers while earning credit toward a degree.

3 credits This course introduces common landscape construction techniques. Students will study fundamental concepts of soils, basic plant needs, irrigation, paving, and plant installation, and will apply their understanding in actual construction projects.

2 credits Introduces all phases of nursery operations. Subjects covered will include: propagation techniques, container culture, field stock culture, and retail garden operations.

4 credits Learn to identify and name approximately 120 plants, most of which are broad-leafed deciduous trees. For each plant, discussion includes its native habitat, potential landscape uses, and cultural practices required for optimum growth in our region. Two all-day Saturday field trips required.

4 credits The focus of this course is on law office practice and its relationship to the individual. Exploration of law office work as related to the American legal system, including legislatures, courts, the executive branch, administrative agencies, the role of state and federal constitutions in resolving legal disputes, the dynamics of the attorney-client relationship, and the interrelationships of law, ethics, and social responsibility.
