3 credits Recommend at least one introductory psychology course before taking this course. Introduction to Abnormal Psychology bridges the gap between mental health-related concepts touched upon in the General Psychology course and the more in-depth analysis of issues relating to emotional disturbance covered in the typical upper division class in Abnormal Psychology. Major topics to be covered will include the historical and current status of behavior disorders, introductory statistics regarding the incidence and classification of persons who are emotionally disturbed and a framework for understanding such phenomena. May be offered through Distance Learning.

The student will have the opportunity to integrate theory and practice gained in the classroom with practical experience in the professional world. 3 credits This course provides a study of the history and practice of physical therapy including an understanding of various health care settings; theory and practical application of basic Physical Therapy data collection and treatment interventions; and an introduction to patient care note writing. The course also covers the role goals of the professional organization, standards of practice, laws and regulation, and licensure requirements for PT's and PTA's.

7 credits This course covers theoretical principles and practical application of the following physical therapy interventions: therapeutic massage, various forms of deep heat, electrical stimulation and management of chronic edema. The course will also cover the indication, contraindications of heat, cold, paraffin, hot/cold packs, and whirlpool and contrast baths. The mechanics of transfers will also be covered. Students will explore rehabilitation strategies to address impairments, functional limitations and disabilities for these conditions. Practical applications will be performed lab.

7 credits This course introduces will study the fundamental basis of disease. It will cover the use of standardized questionnaires; self-care; and home and community management. Study and application of pathology, clinical findings, management of pain, vascular disease, metabolic disorders, and immunological disorders. Lab will allow students to practice and assess.

7 credits This course will cover the pathology, medical treatment, common diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and prevention associated with injuries and conditions of the upper extremity and spine. Practical application of interventions for upper extremity conditions will be practiced.

2 credits The principles and practices of medical emergency procedures commonly encountered in a hospital and/or other clinical setting are examined. Successful completion will lead to CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Automatic External Defibrillator certifications.

4 credits This course addresses the terminology, biomechanical principles of movement, joint structure and function of the upper extremity, the neck, the trunk and the muscles of respiration. Discussion includes muscle origin, insertion, action, nerve innervations and basic exercise techniques for these areas. In addition, students learn and practice muscle strength testing, joint goniometry and range of motion exercise (straight plane and PNF) for these areas.

4 credits This course addresses the terminology, biomechanical principles of movement, joint structure and function of the lower extremity. Discussion includes muscle origin, insertion, action, nerve, innervation and basic exercise techniques for these areas. In addition, students learn and practice muscle strength testing, stretching, joint goniometry and range of motion exercise (straight plane and PNF) for these areas. This course also covers the kinematics components of normal gait and atypical gait patterns, use of assistive devices and gait training as a physical therapy intervention.
