    2 credits NUR 100 provides an overview of introductory concepts basic to contemporary nursing. Topics include nursing history, current nursing education and scope of practice, nursing roles, patterns of health care delivery, cultural diversity, and therapeutic communications. Concepts of health, individual biopsychosocialspiritual needs, nursing process, and legal and ethical responsibilities are explored. Emphasis is placed on the role of the nurse in the delivery of health care. This course is not required for the Nursing Program, nor does its completion yield points toward admission. Offered through Distance Learning.

    3 credits This course is designed to teach a comprehensive and systematic approach to physical assessment. It includes history taking and the examination process of each body system. The learner will have the opportunity to refine basic skills and add advanced skills such as using the otoscope and opthalmoscope, palpating thyroids, eliciting deep tendon reflexes and identifying abnormal heart sounds. It is open to students who have completed the first two terms of a nursing program, LPNs and RNs. This course satisfies the Health Assessment requirement for RN-BSN at OHSU.

    2-12 credits Cooperative Education is a voluntary experience beyond the formal requirements of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Nursing students in Cooperative Education are eligible to earn college credit for job related activities in professional medical settings. Cooperative Education sites may be in specialty areas that are not part of the normal nursing curriculum or in an area where a student wants to gain hands-on experience. While at Cooperative Education sites, students develop skills, integrate theory and practice, expand career knowledge, and make contacts for potential future employment in nursing. First-year nursing students are eligible for Cooperative Education during winter term and are assigned to work with ancillary staff. In spring term of first year and each following term, students with a minimum GPA of 2.8 in nursing courses are eligible for Cooperative Education and work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

    1-3 credits A variable credit course based on independent study contracted between an instructor and a student.
  • 1.00 - 12.00 Credits

    1-12 credits Prerequisite: Instructor approval required. This course offers a student college credit for on-the-job work experience related to his or her educational and career goals. Through Cooperative Education a student can integrate theory and practice, develop skills, expand career knowledge and make contact for future employment. Twenty to 26 credits of co-op are required for the Occupational Skills certificate.
  • 3.00 - 12.00 Credits

    3-12 credits This course provides relevant field experience that integrates theory and practice while providing opportunities to develop skills, explore career options and network with Professionals and employers. Students engage in on-the-job learning experiences in community business, industry and/or governmental sites. Meet with the co-op coordinator the term before (if possible) to set up the internship.

    3 credits Prerequisite: PE 194F. Exercise metabolism and fuel sources for energy, cardiovascular response to activity, basic functioning of physiological systems, and musculoskeletal adaptations to acute exercise, and long-term physical training. Designed for students preparing for the fitness industry, pre-physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, teaching or coaching.

    1 credit Designed to improve daily functioning, this class integrates rhythmic cardiovascular and resistance exercises with core conditioning techniques. Students develop deep muscles within the torso to improve stability, mobility, strength and endurance. Steps, hand weights and elastic bands are utilized to maximize exercise benefits. This class format is suitable for students of various fitness levels.

    1 credit Combination Aerobics is a rhythmic aerobics class designed to increase cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance through a variety of exercise formats. Following the principles of progression and overload, this course will allow students an opportunity to sample formats such as step aerobics, dance aerobics, circuit training, interval training and kickboxing aerobics. Light resistance exercises with the use of hand weights and elastic bands are incorporated to maximize cross training benefits.

    1 credit Simple choreographed dance patterns are incorporated into this rhythmic aerobics class to improve cardiovascular fitness. Movements presented in this course should safely accommodate the needs of the beginning exerciser as well as the conditioned athlete by allowing optional intensity levels to be employed.
