This course is an overview of western "art" music from the Middle Ages to present day. Emphasis is placed on the forms and styles of music categorized by historical periods and the composers' social environment. Extensive music listening is incorporated into the curriculum both in class and as assignments. The ability to read musical notation is not required.(4 credits)
