Required of all political science and pre-law seniors. This course will begin with an analysis of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the state ratificating conventions, and the actions of the First Congress. We will explore the contested issues at the heart of our constitutional republic such as liberty, democracy, federalism, the separation of powers, judicial review, the bill of rights, equality, and problem of slavery. Political Science students will then proceed to explore subsequent developments in American political thought and political leadership; Pre-Law students will examine developments in constitutional interpretation and jurisprudence. As the culmination of the undergraduate experience in political science or pre-law, the student will write a senior research paper. Prerequisites: Senior status; Political Science or Pre-Law major.
