VET 205: Veterinary Anesthesiology

This course provides an overview of the fundamentals of inducing, maintaining, and monitoring anesthesia for animals. The student will gain knowledge on the various sedative, anesthetic, and cardio-active drugs. They will become familiar with the methods of delivery of these drugs as well as the various means of monitoring the degree of effect they have on the animal. Airway management is stressed as a prerequisite to safe and effective management of the sedated or anesthetized animal. The students will be introduced to basic life support procedures in animals experiencing respiratory or cardiac arrest. Prerequisite: VET-104 and VET-106.

This course will review the necessary competencies a veterinary technician should be able to perform successfully after two semesters in the program. Each student is issued a competency book at the beginning of the program, and is expected to satisfactorily perform the required tasks and have them initialed by the attending veterinarian. This course will identify problem areas and work with each student to correct them. Prerequisite: VET-101, VET-104, VET-106, VET- 109, VET-111, and VET-202.

This course will identify any remaining problem areas and work with each student to help them rectify any deficiencies prior to graduation. Prerequisite: All VET courses.
