Diseases, operations, instruments, and symptoms unique to specialized medical field are covered. An introduction to the most common abbreviations used in medical transcription as well as detail on rules and usage of abbreviations in medical reports.

A medical transcriptionist is responsible not only for creating a document, but for making sure it is accurate and returned to the healthcare facility in a final polished form. This means first-rate editing and proofreading skills are a must. This editing and proofreading course gives you practice fine-tuning reports and taking them from rough draft to finished quality. Techniques to proofread and edit for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors are covered with extensive hands-on practice. Prerequisite: MTRN 110, MTRN 120, MTRN 130, and MTRN 140.

Students will begin transcribing acute medical records in order to provide a foundation of experience. All types of inpatient and emergency room medical records such as radiology, pathology, discharge summaries, operative reports, emergency room reports, progress notes, physical therapy reports, cardiac catheterizations, EEGs and all other hospital-generated records are included. Topics include procedures used for transcribing clinic notes, techniques for following physicians' technical instructions, practice downloading audio, and learning how to compare transcriptions. Prerequisite: MTRN 110, MTRN 120, MTRN 130, and MTRN 140.

Students will continue to work on transcribing reports. Transcription of more challenging, authentic physician-dictated reports organized by medical speciality. Emphasis on development of accuracy, speed, and medical knowledge for transcription of history and physical examination reports, consultations, emergency room reports, discharge summaries, operative reports, laboratory reports, diagnostic studies, radiology, and pathology reports. Using reference materials and other resources efficiently is emphasized. Prerequisite: MTRN 110, MTRN 120, MTRN 130, and MTRN 140.

Fundamentals of tone production, breath control, pronunciation, and practical techniques for interpreting songs. May be repeated for a total of four credits. [F]
