SLIS 1150: Introduction to Deaf World

This course introduces the student to the American Deaf community, history and culture. Students will learn the historical processes by which deaf people have come together to form a cohesive community, the contributions made by deaf people to the larger American culture, and the cultural diversity of this minority, including the preservation of its language, American Sign Language. Also presented will be the types of hearing loss that can occur and the majority societal attitudes regarding deafness.
