Problem solving and communication are continuing themes of this course. Manipulatives (including MIRA, Geoboard, Tangrams, attribute blocks and compass), calculators, and computer software (including Logo, Geometer's Sketchpad and a word processor)are used extensively as tools to develop geometric concepts.     5(5-0)F Topics include: analytic geometry of the plane, limits, continuity, differentiation with applications, introductory integration with applications. Students not having taken MTH 181 or MTH 138 should have a B average or better in high school mathematics, including 2 units of algebra, 1 unit of geometry, and 1/2 unit of trigonometry and an approved score on a departmental placement test. Students not meeting prerequisite must have permission of the instructor to enroll. A grade of C or better is required in this course in order to take MTH 280 or MTH 288. This course may not be taken pass/not pass.     2 (2-0) D Students will have various opportunities to apply mathematical concepts developed in previous math courses to the real-world and/or a global society. Business, scientific, statistical, medical, and political situations will be among a wide range of topics explored and modeled. This course will also contain substantial communication, critical thinking, and information management components. Students seeking an AA in General Studies may use this course to fulfill their capstone requirement. Additionally, these students must submit their student learning portfolio in this course. This course may be repeated for up to 6 credit hours if different topics are offered.
