A study and practical application of preparing and managing presentence investigations, court-directed probation and diversion, victim advocacy, parole and other corrections-oriented program management. Components on techniques of client interviews and issues in supervision are included. (S)

Prerequisites: CJS 103 and CJS 223. An overview of the types and styles of management in criminal justice agencies, and the exposure of system professionals to civil liability. A study as well of risk management, privatization and business practices integrated into justice organizations. (S)

Prerequisites: CJS 103, 223 with permission. A study and practical application of the technique of interview and interrogation. Particular emphasis will be placed on the legal and ethical aspects of interview and interrogation. (F)

Prerequisites: CJS 103, CJS 223 and CJS 303. An in-depth review of the types and styles of both written and oral communications practiced in the criminal justice system. Emphasis is on developing effective and proper interviewing and report writing skills, and the use of computers in the communication process. (F/S)

A seminar capstone course for graduating seniors which will bring together knowledge gained in undergraduate courses culminating with an individual research project, the writing of a formal paper and its presentation to the class. (S)

Prerequisite: permission. Practical, supervised experience in a public or private agency. One credit hour per forty hours of agency contact. May be repeated not to exceed six credit hour total.

Prerequisite: permission. Independent or semiindependent study/research under guidance of department faculty. May be repeated, not to exceed three credit hour total.

Prerequisite: 2 years high school algebra, or must be in or have had MAT 013 or higher. This course will provide an overview of modern computer systems including hardware, software, processing, and Input/Output. Topics will also include an introduction to personal computers, operating systems, spreadsheet, database, presentation software, data communications, computer networking, Internet utilization and a discussion of advanced Microsoft Word features. Effective database searching techniques using the Internet and other database search engines will be covered as well as computer security, privacy and ethics. Problem solving techniques and computer solutions planning will also be covered. This course will not count towards a major or minor in CS or CIS. (F/S)

Prerequisite: Score of 80 or higher on the Fundamentals of Computer Systems proficiency test or CSC 113 and must be in or have had MAT 133 or higher. Ethics and responsibility of computer professionals. Algorithms and problem solving to include problem solving strategies, problem abstraction, the role of algorithms in the problem solving process, stepwise-refinement, and debugging strategies. The program development life cycle. Fundamental programming constructs, structured decomposition, and simple I/O. Introduction to the objectoriented paradigm to include abstraction, classes, objects, methods, and recursive methods, parameter passing, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism. Object-oriented design and UML. (F/S)

Prerequisite: CSC 133. An introduction to business programming using COBOL. Students will learn top-down design and structured COBOL programming techniques. Hierarchy charts and psudeocoding are methods taught and used by students on programming assignments to demonstrate programming style, high-level design and documentation. Topics taught include: comparison and data validation; arithmetic functions and decision branching; table processing; sorting, merging and record selections processing; screen design and printed reports.
