This three-day hands-on workshop is designed for participants with little or no working experience with mapping-grade GPS systems and techniques. The workshop will cover basic concepts of the GPS system, as well as basic operation of data loggers, receivers, and antennas. Various strategies for collecting positional data in the field will be presented and practiced. Techniques for using real-time and post-processing differential GPS data will be practiced. Post-processing and editing data collected in the field and exporting the data to a spatial graphics package (like CAD or Geographic Information System-GIS-) will be covered. Participants will gain experience using real-time differential GPS for navigation to locations using differential GPS beacons and satellite differential GPS. This workshop will be a mix of lectures, demonstrations, hands-on computer activities and field exercises with GPS equipment and support software.

As the need for intensive English language instruction increases in our schools, teachers must understand the foundation on which second language acquisition, reading, writing, specific instructional technologies, ESL curriculum development, assessment tools and theories, education reform, philosophy of second language instruction, and other topics relevant to instruction function in our diverse classroom settings. This course is designed to provide insight into the multiple factors related to teaching second language students in grades K-16. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to research a specific topic in the field of ESL and develop a well-written and well-documented paper discussing their findings. Various activities will be presented to help students become familiar with the MLA format and structure for writing a research paper.
