This program is designed to provide non-Spanish-speaking police officers with functional skills in Spanish. The program utilizes phonetic encoding to address the most important Spanish commands, questions, and phrases critical to police work. Upon completion, participants will be able to use Spanish to: disarm a suspect; make arrests and ID individuals; stop and search a vehicle; conduct field sobriety tests; issue warrents; assist in emergencies; read the Miranda Warning; render aid to vicitims; manage prisoners and bystanders. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

This program prepares non-Spanish-speaking nurses to provide medical care and attention to Spanish-speaking patients in medical office settings and in hospitals. In addition to workplace Spanish language, this program provides trans-cultural training for nurses and future nurses. Emphasis is placed on enhancing quality of patient care. Upon completion, participants will be able to use Spanish to: obtain basic information and patient history; obtain vital signs; perform physical assessment; perform routine procedures; prepare patients for surgery or other procedures, administer medications and injections; feed and bathe patients; assist and interact with patient's family; honor patient's requests; assist in emergency situations; identify Hispanic culture traits relating to medical care; reduce Hispanics' fear of hospital settings; understand Hispanic health belief system. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

This is a comprehensive program designed to provide functional Spanish language skills for school personnel who have occasional contact with Spanish-speaking students and visitors. It also includes extensive training for non-Spanish-speaking classroom teachers who have Spanish-speaking children in their classroom. Upon completion, a non-teaching school participant, depending upon his/her job, will be able to use Spanish to monitor and control non-classroom school settings; respond to medical emergencies; greet and give basic instructions to parents or visitors; engage in security measures; and identify students' needs. Classroom teachers will be able to use Spanish for classroom and instructional management. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.

Offered: Su. This three credit course centers on the methods and techniques employed by archaeologists in discovering the history and material culture of ancient Israel. Students learn from start to finish the process of archaeological field investigation and participation in a supervised excavation. Students learn how archaeologists detect human occupation on the landscape by surveying, excavating, and crating evidence of the past. The course does not assume students have privious archaeological field experience. Participants will learn theoretical and practical aspects of excavation. Archaeological fieldwork is demanding. Students should be in good physical condition and enjoy sustained, strenuous teamwork.
