LAW 465: Internship

Offered: F, Sp, Su. An academic program which offers criminal justice and legal studies majors an opportunity to integrate theory with actual practice. Students spend at least 135 hours in a position related to their major. Anticipated learning objectives are established in a contract agreed to by the student, the on-site supervisor and the course professor. The student will work with the faculty member to identify a topic during the Internship to develop further and present on in LAW 470. May be repeated for up to 6 credit hours. Prerequisite: LAW255.

Paper and Powerpoint presentation will be required, based on a topic developed during the Internship. This course should be taken during the student's senior year. Prerequisites: Senior standing and LAW465 or permission of course instructor.

Prerequisite: junior or senior status, major/minor on file with the department, 2.0 overall GPA and a 2.5 GPA in his/her program.(One credit hour = 3 hours per week for 45 hours for the semester, 2 credit hours = 6 hours per week for 90 hours for the semester, etc., up to 6 credit hours for 270 hours for the semester.)

Offered: Sp. A required course for the Certificate and Masters Program designed to present the basic topics in forensic pathology. These topics include manner, cause and mechanism of death, sharp force trauma, blunt force trauma, gunshot wounds, child abuse, deaths from drug abuse, motor vehicular deaths, sex-related deaths, and sudden-unexpected deaths. Students will attend a series of forensic autopsies to observe the role of this procedure in determining the cause, manner, and mechanism of death.

This includes essential components to consider prior to evaluation; such as organizational mission and ethical dilemmas. Techniques of sampling, data gathering, and evaluation will be demonstrated via classroom application and academic resources. Academic writing skills will be generated within the framework of a research propposal.
