SPA 101Q: Elementary Spanish I

An introduction to the Spanish language with extensive practice in pronunciation, simple conversation, aural comprehension, fundamentals of grammar, and reading short passages. Basic sentence patterns and grammatical principles will be reinforced through a great many oral and written activities and exercises. Aspects of Hispanic culture will also be explored. Practical application emphasis. Three credit hours/eight sessions.

An introductory course designed to equip the student with the linguistic skills necessary for verbal and written communication at the elementary level of communicative competence in Spanish. SPA 101-102 also offers an overview of the culture of the Hispanic community throughout the world and an opportunity to consider the possibility of cross-cultural ministry within the context of the Hispanic community. SPA 102 is offered as a continuation to SPA 101. Students who have not completed SPA 101 at Belhaven must secure written permission from the instructor to take SPA 102.

Intermediate Spanish continues the introduction to Spanish language and the culture of the Hispanic community. The course is designed to equip the student with the linguistic skills necessary for verbal and written communication at the intermediate level of communicative competence. Comprehension skills are enhanced through the reading of selected portions from the world of Hispanic literature. A continued examination of the culture of the Hispanic community and potential areas of ministry in it are an integral part of this course. The course is conducted primarily in Spanish.
