FALL and SPRING This is a survey course of the basic concepts in the sociological study of society, culture, personality, social organizations, the range of associational life, and social process.

SPRING Basic social science research methods are studied, including experimental designs, observational studies, and surveys. Research design, research tools, data collection, analysis of data, and reporting of findings will be covered. Ethical issues in social research will be discussed. FALL This course examines the family as a social/cultural unit with emphasis on parental interaction with the developing child. Focus is on multidisciplinary theories of family dynamics across the life-span. Consideration is given to societal influences, various family structures and roles, collaborative school relationships, abuse and neglect, and the effects of culture and ethnicity on parent-child relationships. Christian principles related to parenting are examined.

FALL This course explores how the church can help in the guiding of family strengths. Topics include how the church and family interact, the role of the church in educating parents to give leadership to discipleship ministries in their homes, inter-generational learning in the church, and approaches to family enrichment. SPRING This course is designed to study and apply biblical principles focusing on making disciples among the suffering, homeless, and poor population. Each student will study a specific area of interest such as prison ministry, addiction recovery, homelessness, etc. An immersion field experience will be required. (Also DSC 338X)

ARR This course helps students develop the necessary personal and job search skills for the transition from college to the world of work. Students learn to write resumes and professional correspondence. Effective methods of job searching, networking, interviews, and using the internet are discussed and applied. SPRING The purpose of this course is to explore a holistic view of human sexuality through the examination of sociological, biological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of human sexual nature and behavior. FALL Social psychology is the scientific study of how people think about, influence, and relate to one another. This course examines key theoretical approaches in the field with emphasis upon their application for people relating together in various contexts. FALL The structure and dynamics of marriage and the family are studied. The course will examine the family as a social institution and the processes of dating, engagement, marriage, child rearing, aging, divorce, and remarriage. Biblical teaching will be brought to bear on the subject to enable the student to develop a Christian perspective on marriage and the family.
