    FALL, SPRING, or SUMMER This non-credit skills course is designed to afford international students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in their major program to a "real-world" off-campus work experience. This course is supervised by theinternational student advisor in conjunction with the department advisor. Academic objectives will be determined by the program director in cooperation with the employer. At the end of the course, the student will submit a written report detailing how these objectives were met. Prerequisite: This course is offered to international students after their freshman year.

    FALL This course provides the theoretical and practical foundation for the design and management of instruction and for the use of formal and informal assessment strategies. The course provides the prospective teacher with the opportunity to plan instructional units and to assess learning based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curricular goals. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.

    FALL This course provides an understanding of the exceptional learner, and of the rapidly changing field of special education. Topics include special education categories and terminology, current issues and laws, alternative program designs for meeting exceptional needs (mainstreaming, integration, and inclusion), the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and assessment, school responsibilities, parent rights, the roles of the regular teacher and the special educator, the origin and nature of exceptionalities, and instructional strategies for the exceptional learner. Observation is required in appropriate school settings. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.

    SPRING This course explores teaching as a matter of relationships among individuals. Students explore these relationships to discover their need to be grounded in rapport and mutual respect between teacher and students, and among students. Important ideas covered are how group motivation and effective classroom management create an environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.

    SPRING In this course following student teaching, students are challenged to consider the relationship between their Christian faith and their role as teacher. They will grow in understanding of current practical and political issues, as well as educational trends affecting the profession. The course addresses such relevant issues as job searching, resume development, and successful interviewing, and it provides a culminating experience in preparing their educational profiles.

    FALL A study of a broad range of literature for children from prekindergarten through middle school age. Emphasis is placed on book selection that considers developmental needs and interests, Christian values and universal themes, as well as established criteria from Newbery, Caldecott, and other awards. Attention is given to exploring methods of using literature in teaching.

    SPRING This course introduces and develops skills needed to teach the drama and movement arts in the elementary classroom. Content includes processes and skills as well as appreciation of the arts. Instructional techniques and media and materials suitable for teaching children are included. Field experience in approved site required. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.

    SPRING Presents an integrated model of communication using a constructivist approach. Students learn the various methods, techniques, and materials needed for developing all of the communication skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing--for children from birth through grade six. Needs of the exceptional child are considered; emphasis is on issues, research, NCTE standards, and current practices in reading and the communication arts. Field experience in approved site includes diagnostic testing and instruction. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.

    SPRING This course involves learning methods and techniques of teaching mathematics for levels K-6. Emphasis is on application of learning theory to teaching mathematics. Students receive instruction in teaching strategies, models, and materials. They produce lessons and materials and use them during an extensive field experience in approved site. This course is based on the NCTM and Minnesota Graduation Standards. Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Department.
