This course introduces critical differences and similarities between Spanish and English while students develop competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Aspects of Hispanic culture are also frequently introduced in class, which help students develop cultural sensitivity toward the Spanish-speaking world as part of increased global understanding. The entire present tense is covered, including all irregular verbs.

Introduction to Interpreting and Translation introduces students to the career competencies, ethics, and major theories related to the fields of interpreting and translation. Through readings by experts in the field, case studies, and professional profiles, students will learn about the fields of interpreting and translation and exercise key skills required to work in these professions. (Same as INDS 1101).

Students explore the culture and civilization of Spanish-speaking world. Through an investigation of the social, political, and artistic aspects of the target culture, students develop greater insight into the global implications of cultural practices. By comparing and contrasting their own culture with that of Spanish-speaking peoples, students develop the intercultural competency that allows them to recognize various perspectives on global issues and analyze alternative solutions. This course is taught in either English or Spanish, depending on the section.

Continuation of basic language skills. Development of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills to become proficient at the appropriate level. Cultural understanding and sensitivity are important aspects of the courses.

Miami is home to robust Cuban and Haitian communities that play a large role in defining the artistic, culinary, intellectual, literary, and cultural landscapes of the city. By engaging with members of these communities, students will deepen their understanding of concepts related to diaspora, increase their language skills in French and/or Spanish, and gain a greater appreciation for the perspectives and experiences of members of diaspora communities within the U.S.

Students review and extend their competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students analyze cultural products and practices of the Spanish-speaking world and identify the values that underlie them. Students investigate the art, music, history, literature, and lived experience of Spanish-speaking peoples. This builds intercultural competency and increases global awareness. Major grammatical focus includes a review of the preterite and imperfect, formation and uses of the present subjunctive, and introduction to the compound tenses. This course is intended for students who have successfully completed SPAN 1200 or the equivalent.

Students review and extend their competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students analyze cultural products and practices of the Spanish-speaking world and identify the values that underlie them. Students investigate art, music, history, literature, and lived experience of Spanish-speaking peoples. This builds intercultural competency and increases global awareness. Major grammatical focus includes the imperfect subjunctive, future, conditional, and compound verb forms. This course is intended for students who have successfully completed SPAN 2100 or the equivalent.

The conversation and composition course is designed to help students expand the oral and written proficiency acquired in previous courses. This course is strongly recommended for those students who have taken two years of language at the community college level, or who have acquired equivalent knowledge through other courses. It is especially designed to enhance and help improve speaking and writing skills through activities that simulate real-life situations.

This is a course dedicated to reading and interpreting literature in Spanish. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of literature appreciation through careful reading, analysis and class discussion of Spanish-Language readings.
