This course will teach the student the proper techniques to prepare for entry into the confined space, enter a confined space, monitor the atmosphere, assess a victim, package the victim based on space restrictions, and safely remove the victim. (Prereq: FRPT1205 and training to at least the NFPA 472, Standard for Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials) (EP) 1 cr

This course will teach the student the proper techniques to conduct a size-up of a collapsed structure, recognize hazards and warning signs, identify building construction, determine the type of collapse, establish a perimeter, and call for appropriate assistance. Students will also be able to identify different types of shoring. (Prereq: None) (EP) 1 cr

This course will teach the student to evaluate a rescue incident; manage the resources needed to conduct rescues; perform basic patient care and transfer; and lower and raise victims using basic rope rescue. (Prereq: FRPT1176) (BP/EP) 3 cr

This course will cover the following: Safety rules, Equipment, Rescue Knots, Anchor Points and Systems, Lowering, Belaying, Rappelling, Self Rescue and Pick-Off Techniques. The student will learn Low and High Angle Stretcher rigging along with Patient Packaging. Basic Mechanical Advantage Systems as well as stretcher Raising and Lowering and Low/High Angle Stretcher Tending. The course includes multiple practice rescue scenarios. (Prereq: FRPT1225) (EP) 1 cr

This course begins with an introduction of new equipment and techniques. The class then moves outside for hands on training in Knot Passing while on Rappel, Rappelling with a Brake Bar Rack and Pick-Offs. The student will work with Mechanical Advantage Systems, Highlines and Passing a knot through the system. The course includes multiple practical rescue scenarios with an increasing degree of difficult. It is recommended that this course be taken at lease 6 months after attending Ropes I. This course is to supplement the material and skills learned in Firefighter I, Apparatus Operator and Hazardous Materials classes and give the student hands on experience by simulating the job in the field. This will give the student experience in working a fire department shift and an opportunity to exercise their skills and decision-making abilities through various controlled scenarios including different types of fires, fire alarms, vehicle accidents, rescues, hazardous materials release and other emergency calls. This course explores basic emergency management principles for public safety personnel. Topics such as incident command systems (ICS) and The National Incident Management System (NIMS) will be covered and will meet requirements for professional licensure in various areas of public safety including the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board, the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training, and the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board. This course also satisfies various prerequisites to attended training at the national level through the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium. Additionally, students will also cover topics included as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agencies' (FEMA) Professional Development Series that provide a well-rounded set of fundamentals for those in the emergency management profession. Many students build on this foundation to develop their careers. Upon completion of the Professional Development Series, students will earn a certificate from FEMA. This course explores the needs of public safety officials who have responsibility for emergency preparedness planning and response. Emergency planning concepts such as legal and jurisdictional contexts, planning and response responsibilities, planning approaches for different types of emergencies will be covered. This course addresses specific issues associated with the planning process, including the role of the manager, the necessity for multi-agency involvement, various analytical techniques employed in planning, different levels of emergency planning, and different elements of the plan. This course examines the history and perspectives of emergency management, hazards, concepts and taxonomies, all-hazards approach, phases of emergency management, risk assessment, risk communication and emergency management functions. This course explores the theories and fundamentals of how and why fires start, spread, and are controlled. Provides an understanding of the basic principles of fire chemistry, the process of fire combustion, fire behavior, and examination of the effects of fire behavior on the safety of individual firefighters.
