Introduces the sociological frame of reference which focuses on sociology as a science and examines concepts related to human social behavior such as social structure, culture, socialization, sex roles, statuses, roles, groups, organizations, social stratifications and racial and ethnic relations. Applies the sociological frame of reference to the study of social problems, their identification, analysis of causes and possible solutions. Problems explored may include mental disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, crime, delinquency, group discrimination, inequality, poverty, alienation, domestic and international violence, environment and energy. Introduces the student to the institution of death in the United States. From a sociological frame of reference, the student will study death as a system for dealing with the social processes of dying, death, and bereavement. SOC 204, 205, or instructor permission recommended. Prerequisite: WRI 121.
