WELD 1770: GAS METAL - FLUX CORE ARC WELDING

The student will be introduced to the basics of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), which includes metal transfer modes, electrode identification, and a detailed introduction to the power source, repairs, techniques, and set-up. The course projects will enable the student to advance in their skills in GMAW leading up to the process of Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) using dual shield with the final being based on the AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Code. The student will be required to fabricate several small projects for grade using the techniques taught in this course. The student will be required to use a complete set of blueprints and shop drawings interpreting all the appropriate American Welding Society's (AWS) standard welding symbols and special notations. Projects will be fabricated to close tolerances stated on the blueprint. Major Topics include: Safety and Health of the Welder/Fabricator in the welding industry, use of mathematical equations to layout branch patters for pipe and the proper use and care of small hand tools used the layout and fabrication of the structure steel. The student will weld the pipe coupons with ER 70S-2 welding rod. Students will also weld coupons with ER 70S-6, and E 7018 in the SMAW process. All welded coupons turned in for a grade will be destructive tested to The American Welding Society pipe standards, using the bending machine the welding lab. (2 lect., 4 lab)
