    Description: Students selected by the Law School to participate in the externship must obtain a student practice certification at click here Students participating in this program will serve as externs in the Public Defender's Office of Montgomery County in Norristown. Student-externs will be supervised by Assistant Public Defenders in that office, and each extern will be required to spend twelve (12) hours per week at the office. They will participate in the work of the office, assisting in the representation of criminal defendants. The Montgomery County Public Defenders Office represents defendants in a full range of criminal matters. In addition, attorneys in the office handle state parole hearings in the State Correctional Institution at Greaterford and the County prison; juvenile delinquency and dependency matters; and involuntary mental health commitments. Students participating in this externship observe the full range of proceedings and will work at each of the above sites. Students will first learn how to prepare files and interview clients and will gradually progress to representing clients in court. Externs will represent real clients in actual courtroom situations. The rate and timing of a student's progression will be determined by the student and the supervising attorney. In addition, each extern will be required to maintain a journal of experiences and work done in the externship, to meet bi-weekly with the Law School supervisor, and to evaluate the externship in writing at the end of the semester. Grading will be on a pass/fail basis. Their supervising attorneys will evaluate students; however, the final grade is the responsibility of the Law School supervisor.     Description: Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania (LASP) provides legal services to indigent clients throughout Delaware County from its office in the city of Chester, PA. Students in this externship will assist victims of domestic violence in custody matters and may also assist in obtaining Orders of Protection from Abuse from the Court of Common Pleas. Students must spend a minimum of twelve hours per week, in court and at the LASP office in Chester. The supervising attorney at LASP will train and supervise the students throughout the semester. Students will participate in interviewing and counseling clients, investigating facts, negotiating, attending court proceedings, preparing for hearings, drafting court orders and appearing in court on behalf of their clients on a weekly basis. Students should plan on spending two full days at this externship. In addition, each student must maintain a journal of experiences and work done in the externship, must meet every other week with the law school supervisor and must evaluate the externship in writing at the end of the semester. Grading will be on a pass/fail basis. The supervising attorney at LASP will evaluate the students.     Description: This Externship has positions in two different divisions of the University Counsel's Office. One is with the Vice President's Office and the other with the Athletic Compliance Office. University Counsel, Athletics Department Info Students participating in this program will serve as externs in the Compliance Office of the Villanova University Department of Athletics. The Compliance Office is responsible for ensuring that members of the University's staff, student-athletes and other individuals or groups representing the University s athletic interest comply with applicable rules and regulations of the NCAA, The Big East Conference, the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Patriot League, the Colonial Athletic Association, and Villanova University. Student-externs will research compliance issues of concern to Villanova Athletics and assist with any related projects under the supervision of attorneys and staff from the Compliance Office. Past student-externs improved the Athletics Department's website on compliance and drafted a coach's handbook on NCAA regulations. Students are required to spend at least twelve (12) hours per week at the Compliance Office. In addition, each extern will be required to maintain a journal of experiences and work done in the externship, to meet bi- weekly with the Law School supervisor, and to evaluate the externship in writing at the end of the semester. Grading will be on a pass/fail basis. The student extern may work on preliminary hearings and Municipal Court trials. Each student extern is required to spend at least 12 hours per week working for the Defender Association. This includes, but is not limited to, two class sessions--one on Wednesday mornings and the other on Friday mornings. Most of the class sessions are at the Defender Association's office in Center City. However, some classes are held elsewhere in Philadelphia and court attendance is required. Students must provide their own transportation. In addition, each student extern must maintain a journal of experiences and meet biweekly with the law school supervisors. The externship is graded PASS/FAIL. The supervising attorney(s) at the Defender Association will evaluate the student-externs.     Description: Students must have completed two semesters of law school to enroll in this externship. Students may find it helpful to concurrently enroll in an intellectual property course; however, this is not required. Students participating in this externship will spend 12 hours per week at the offices of Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in center city Philadelphia. Responsibilities will include daily contact with artists (visual, performing, etc.) and authors who seek legal advice or referral to an attorney from PVLA. Typically, students will provide PVLA clients with written materials responsive to the clients' needs, and communicate with clients and PVLA's volunteer attorneys to arrange for short- or long-term legal representation on a wide variety of areas of the law. Students will interview clients for short-term representation and may observe interviews of clients with long-term legal needs. Students may also attend educational seminars offered by PVLA. For more information about PVLA, see www.pvla.org. Externs are required to meet with the faculty advisor on a regular basis and must keep a detailed log of their externship work. In addition, each extern will research and prepare a pamphlet on a legal issue or topic of the extern's choice (in consultation with PVLA) to be distributed to PVLA clients. Grading is pass/fail. The faculty advisor will consult with the supervising attorney at PVLA periodically during the externship, but the final grade will be assigned by the faculty advisor. Externs must be approved by PVLA prior to starting their externships.     Description: 3L Students Only This externship is with the Support Center for Child Advocates, a non-profit organization providing free legal and social services to Philadelphia's abused and neglected children. In this externship, students will develop a working knowledge of the dependency system in Philadelphia, gain practical experience in family law, and develop lawyering skills including professional responsibility, dispute resolution and research and writing abilities. 3.00credit(s) Restrictions: Must be enrolled in one of the following Levels: Law School
