    1 Cr. Keyboard skill development for music majors designed to provide the student with the skills needed to complete the required Piano Profi ciency III Exam. Activities include: piano technique and music theory through keyboard patterns including all major and minor scales, two octaves hands together and selected vocalises; sight-reading at an early intermediate level; preparation of vocal solo (taken from the current Wisconsin solo/ ensemble contest list) and high school level choral accompaniments; preparation of four-part open score reading; harmonization of familiar tunes by ear with interesting accompaniments in the keys of C, F, and G; and the study and memorization of appropriate repertoire. The Piano Profi ciency III Exam will act as the fi nal exam for the course. Target completion date of this exam is spring semester of the sophomore year. Taken in conjunction with a music theory course of an appropriate level (MUSC 251 or 252). Prerequisites: MUSC 152, 205. May be repeated for credit. Graded CR/NC.

    2 Cr. This course will provide a basic overview understanding of how technology serves the fi eld of music as a whole. Students will have the opportunity to work with technological developments applicable to their area of specialization. Specifi - cally, students will receive a hands-on introduction to the following computer software: Finale (notation), Mastertracks Pro (sequencing), Band-in-a-Box (arranging), Norton Masterworks (interactive CD-Rom), Musique and Practica Musica (both music theory tutorials). Prerequisites: 105, 152.

    2 Cr. A study of the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet as used in English and French languages. Emphasis is placed on the sounds of these symbols and their application to appropriate vocal literature. Offered every fall semester.

    2 Cr. Continuation of the study of the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet as used in German and Italian languages. Emphasis is placed on the sounds of these symbols and their application to appropriate vocal literature. Offered every spring semester. Prerequisite: 237.
  • 3.00 Credits

    3 Cr. Expansion of materials of Theory I and II with the study of diatonic seventh chords, secondary dominant, diminished seventh chords, and modulation techniques. An introduction to 16th century contrapuntal and homophonic styles will include study of species counterpoint and analysis of parts from selected Palestrina masses. Sight singing, analysis, composition and use of FINALE and MacGAMUT software will be incorporated into the course. Prerequisite: 105, 152.

    3 Cr. Further study of chromatic harmony including Neapolitan, mixed modality and augmented sixth chords, in addition to expanded tonal resources of the late 19th century and contemporary techniques and formal processes of the 20th century music. Students will also be exposed to formal structures of the Common Practice ear such as binary, ternary, rondo, variation and sonata forms. Application of these techniques will include analysis, sight singing, composition and use of FINALE and MacGAMUT software. Prerequisite: 251.

    2 Cr. A class which explores application of the principles employed by F.M. Alexander in fi nding easier use of self in activity. While performing artists have found it useful, this technique is also valuable in everyday activities. Activities that require motion are particularly suited to this work. May be repeated for credit. Graded CR/NC.

    1-3 Cr. Courses on topics of interest to music students offered on the basis of need, interest, or timeliness. Prerequisites as determined by instructor. Restricted to students with freshman or sophomore standing. May be repeated for credit.

    1-10 Cr. Internship experience relative to the elective area of emphasis for the pedagogy majors and church music minors. Credit for experience must be sought prior to occurrence, and a learning contract must be submitted before the end of the fi rst week of the semester. Restricted to students with freshman and sophomore standing. Consent of department required. Graded CR/NC.
  • 3.00 Credits

    1-3 Cr. Independent reading and/or research under the guidance of a music faculty member. Refer to the academic policy section for independent study policy. Independent study contract is required. May be repeated for credit.
