Prerequisite: Sophomore standing A consideration of the development, operation, and consequences of gender socialization, both male and female. Comparisons of gender roles in various cultures and societies will also be made. Consideration of the social forces causing changes in the socially constructed definitions of gender and gender roles. This course is a cultural study of the ways in which gender roles for both men and women in Europe have changed since the 18th century. Literary and other primary sources will complement secondary studies of conceptions of gender. Topics include Enlightenment conceptions of sex and gender, the French Revolution, the 19th-century cult of domesticity, the rise of consumer culture, nationalism and gender, the crisis of gender between the wars, Fascism, and the modern feminist movement in Europe. An introductory course covering major issues, debates, and challenges in contemporary feminism as an evolving political and academic movement. The course considers the representation and experiences of women in our culture, the construction of gender and gender roles, and the impact of conceptions of sex and gender in areas such as body image, health, sexuality, reproductive rights, work, and domestic violence. This course examines ecofeminism as an intersection of environmentalism and feminism, focusing on relationships between nature, culture, and gender. Readings and discussion explore diverse approaches to ecofeminist concerns, including environmental ethics, spirituality, and political practice. Considers the role gender plays in conflicts, social resistance, and in efforts to create a more just world. Frameworks of peace studies and feminism are used to examine the role women have played in social movement organizing and resistance to war. This course is taught in a seminar-style format wherein students read primary and popular literature in biology, primatology, sociobiology, and feminism. We will explore why sex matters and ideas about "scientifically" established differencesacross sex, race, and sexuality. Topics will include differences in development of women and men, mate selection theories, sexual strategies, beauty, science, sexism, racism, and stereotypes. Offered winter session in odd-numbered years.

The course covers various early civilizations by examining ways that technological innovations, religious ideas, cultures, social structures, economic forces, and the environment interacted to produce the course of human events.
