3.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GOV 110 and junior standing Seminar on methods of analyzing state or national environmental policies, including the rational planning model, cost-benefit, and risk assessment. The policy-making process, including implementation and enforcement, are also examined.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GOV 110 and junior standing Explores how planning, property rights and regulation can control the effects of human activity on land and water. Attitudes and traditions involving the land base itself, zoning and other land regulations, and water law. Concludes with such mixed-resource problems as groundwater, shore lands and wetlands, historic landmarks and linear corridors. Liberal education: Global Environment.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: Junior standing Introduction to legal decision-making and basic environmental case law covering water, land use, pollution and environmental impact statements. The course also looks at statutory interpretation and development.
-
4.00 Credits
This course deals with humans' relationship to the physical Earth. Emphasis is on: 1) earth resource such as water, minerals, and energy resources; 2) geological hazards such as volcanoes, earthquakes, and floods; 3) the way in which the Earth's physical systems provide the foundation of all life; and 4) gaining an appreciation for the Earth's history and beauty. Liberal Education: Geoscience and Environmental Perspectives. Students will not receive credit for both GSC 105 and GSC 120.
-
4.00 Credits
Origin and character of rocks and minerals. Interpreting the evidence of such geologic forces as the work of ground water, the erosive and transportive work of running water, wind, and ice. Understanding the nature of volcanism, earthquakes, and mountain building as they relate to place tectonics. CLEP credit accepted. Liberal Education: Geoscience. Students will not receive credit for both GSC 105 and GSC 120.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GSC 105, GSC 120 or SPC 112 The origin and characteristics of sediments and soils. Topics include: sediment production by weathering of rock; the development of soil by alteration of sediment at Earth's surface; sediment and soil classification; water and nutrients in soils; engineering properties of soils; and soil degradation. Field and laboratory exercises focus on sediment and soil description and classification.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GSC 105, GSC 120, SPC 112 The geological occurrence and use of water, minerals, and energy resources, as well as the impacts of the use of these resources. Environmental issues and solutions to resource problems are emphasized. Liberal Education: Environmental Perspectives.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GSC 105, GSC 120 or SPC 112 A survey of Earth's surface processes and how they influence human activities. Topics include earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, floods, subsidence, mass wasting, coastal hazards, hurricanes and tornadoes. Liberal Education: Environmental Perspectives.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GSC 105 or GSC 120 Study of the processes of the hydrologic cycle. Analysis of the occurrence and movement of water in the atmosphere, over land and in the ground.
-
4.00 Credits
Prerequisite: GSC 105 or GSC 120 The study of the earth's surface features and the processes that create and modify them.
