Centers projects promote environmental leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community outreach, often in conjunction with the Sigurd Olsen Environmental Institute. Students studying the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities merge their respective skills in concert with area citizens, public officials, and business and non-profit organization representatives to address bioregional issues of significance.

Emphasis is placed on microcomputer simulations of pollution and dispersal using Gaussian plume models. Specialized modeling methods for lakeshore environments are also examined.
