Prerequisite: Freshman standing This course introduces students to the four areas available for concentration within the major. We will attempt to integrate aspects of scientific approaches with public policy and humanistic approaches to environmental issues. Some of the methods and tools used for analysis of environmental issues will be examined. Students will investigate one local environmental issue in some greater depth using some of the tools that have been introduced. Includes inclass discussion, field trips, and guest speakers. Explores the emerging definitions and responsibilities of leaders and communities in an active and environmentally literate citizenry. Environmental citizenship means being informed about one's place in the biosphere, acting responsibly on this basis and preparing for meaningful membership in the larger community of living things whose home is the biosphere. Prerequisite: BIO 115 Principles and concepts of ecology as illustrated in various natural areas. Topics of energy relationships, trophic structure, nutrient cycles, population dynamics and ecological adaptations are covered. Lab work consists of field experiences in the local area.

Prerequisite: GOV 110 Prepared students for work in public and private bureaucracies and organizations. Covers the legal, ethical, and constitutional bases for governmental and other organizations; the general approaches to planning and policy development; and the work environment, including hiring, firing, performance policies, rights of employees, and career management. Explores the multitude of resources and techniques available to educators who want to share their knowledge, interest, or concern for the environment with others. Students receive exposure, training, or certification in Project Wild, Project Wet, Leopold Education Project, Teaching for a Sustainable World, and others suitable for infusion into a variety of grades and subjects. This course examines ecofeminism as an intersection of environmentalism and feminism, focusing on relationships between nature, culture, and gender. Readings and discussion explore diverse approaches to ecofeminist concerns, including environmental ethics, spirituality, and political practice. Offered winter session in odd-numbered years.
