Prerequisite: Core I and II courses (or concurrent enrollment in Core II), MUS 081, senior standing, and admission to the Teacher Education Program An interdisciplinary approach to the application of teaching strategies; this seminar integrates music, visual arts, and physical education with literacy and social studies to create meaningful curriculum and instruction for elementary and middle school students. Teaching experiences in elementary and middle school classrooms are combined with theoretical constructs to offer thematic applications of instructional methodology. Field experience: 40 hours in a 1st through 8th grade classroom.

Students explore instructional pedagogy in the natural sciences and environmental education as these curricular areas combine with literacy and mathematics in an integrated curriculum. Teaching experiences give students the opportunity to apply integrated methods in elementary and middle school classrooms. Field experience: 40 hours in a 1st though 8th grade classroom.

Prerequisite: Junior standing This course provides an in-depth exposure to literature for children from kindergarten through middle school grades. Students read a variety of children's books, focusing on both classical and contemporary works. Emphasis is on evaluation of literature, with an analysis of text and artwork, multi-culturalism, and the profound influence of literature on the emotional and academic growth of children.

Reading and evaluation of a broad range of adolescent literature will be covered. This course is designed for middle and secondary teachers in all content areas, and focuses on issues and themes as they relate to adolescent development across the curriculum.

All students who complete undergraduate degrees in Teacher Education are required to participate in activities that will contribute to their personal and professional growth in the area of human relations. The human relations program has been designed so that students keep these concepts in front of them throughout their years as a student and recognize the connections between human relations and the life and career of a teacher.

Prerequisite: Senior standing This course is to be taken concurrently with student teaching. It meets on a scheduled basis for the K-12 school semester and focuses on issues in schooling, human relations, and elementary and secondary curriculum.
