Eligible students engage in independent laboratory, field, theoretical, or case study research supervised by a faculty mentor. In this first phase, students prepare a literature review and compose a proposal for research carried out during the following semester. The first step in the practicum sequence, it provides an introduction to the theory, skills and processes associated with the helping relationship. In addition, it is designed to aid students in the development of self-awareness in interpersonal relations, and the practice of communication and helping skills.
