Global processes – such as migration, urbanization, environmental change, and economic interdependence – spread diseases and later health conditions. To deal with these challenges, new ways of thinking about health are demanded. This course explores health and disease in global terms, with special focus on the most vulnerable. It covers issues such as the causes and consequences of health disparities, how global processes play out in local communities, and how cross-cultural perspectives can help us understand and address disease. Recommended background: ANTH 1302 or SOCI 1301. (ANTH 4346 is the same course as SOCI 4346.)

An introduction to competency-based assessment of psychological disorders, substance abuse disorders, the ecological perspective on mental health and the bio-pyschosocial framework for assessment and intervention. Restricted to MSW students.

This course covers emerging trends in cultural competence and adaptation, and the culturally-grounded perspective from a standpoint of intersectionality. Students will examine the impact of discrimination, oppression, and economic deprivation on disenfranchised populations and theoretical and historical perspectives on racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, ageism, ableism, and other forms of discrimination and powerlessness with an emphasis on social work in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Students will develop awareness of their own culture and attitudes, beliefs, and responses to diversity within the context of professional social work values and culturally responsive practice. Restricted to MSW students.

Develops knowledge, values and skills, in the application of practice theory including the use of professional communication skills in engagement, assessment, intervention and termination in work with diverse individuals. Restricted to MSW students.
