Review of trends and issues impacting nursing and health care today and in the future. Topics include knowledge, judgment, skill, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. Emphasis on clinical decision-making for clients in medical surgical settings experiencing health problems involving cardiovascular disorders, neurological disorders, liver, biliary and pancreatic disorders, renal and urinary disorders, hematologic disorders, and cancer. Focus given to knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. An introduction to the field of respiratory care. Topics include the history of respiratory care, hospital organization , medical malpractice, ethics, vital signs, body mechanics, basic cardiopulmonary assessment, infection control and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Lab Fee $24

An introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary system. Includes the terminology used in respiratory physiology. Prerequisite: BIOL 2401.

Provides students with the essential knowledge of the equipment and techniques used in the treatment of pulmonary disease and their clinical application. The following areas are discussed in depth: oxygen therapy, humidity and aerosol therapy, hyperinflation therapy, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, arterial puncture, and interpretation. Provides students with the essential knowledge of airway care and mechanical ventilation. Airway care includes indication, techniques, equipment, and hazards and complications. Mechanical ventilation includes indication, initiation, modes, clinical application, management, complications, and weaning.Prerequisite: RSPT 1410. Lab Fee $24

Comprehensive review for selected respiratory care credentialing examinations. Test matrices and exam content areas for selected exams will be presented.
