Conventional and non-conventional wildlife management techniques. Includes wildlife harvest, identification of plants desirable to specific wildlife species, identification of diseases and disease symptoms, mapping by geographic information systems (GIS), acquisition procedures for proper and legal permits, advantages and disadvantages of high fences (game deterrent fences or artificial barriers), design of facilities to restrain game birds and animals, data collection procedures, firearm safety, first aid concerns, and canine handling skills for locating and recovering hunted species. Students will earn a certificate for scoring big game provided by the Buckmasters Trophy Records Organization. Three lecture hours per week. TSI Requirement: M1; R2; W1. History of wildlife management in the U.S. and basic wildlife management techniques including wildlife identification. Includes plant identification, soil types, and habitat manipulation practices including required equipment, domestic stock handling, and threatened and endangered species. This course provides an introduction to historical and current wildlife and habitat management systems across forests, rangelands, and wetlands of North America. Three lecture hours per week. Includes non-conventional management techniques such as high-fenced pens, wildlife nutritional requirements, wildlife behavior, handling techniques (with and without drugs), necropsy techniques, data collection procedures, genetic manipulation of target species (emphasizing herbivores--native and exotic species), disease identification, and permit acquisition. Also covers facility design and maintenance, judging quality of target species, handling of harvested animals, photographic skills, and ethical treatment of animals.
