3.00 Credits
A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Provides clinical practice to develop affective and psychomotor (and reinforce cognitive) skills, to include lung expansion therapy, postural drainage and percussion, manual resuscitation devices, suctioning, pulse oximetry, arterial sampling techniques and blood gas analysis, as well as review patient assessment (patient history, vital signs and physical assessment), medical terminology and symbols, infection control, chest x-ray interpretation, medical gas therapy, oxygen analyzers, and humidity/aerosol therapy. Prerequisite: RSPT 1360 Semester Hours 3 (11 clinical hours/week)

Provides student with essential knowledge of airway care and mechanical ventilation. Airway care includes indications, techniques, equipment, and hazards and complications. Mechanical ventilation includes indications, initiation, modes, clinical application, management, complications, and weaning. Prerequisite: RSPT 1431. Semester Hours 4 (3 lec/4 lab)

Provides for the development of knowledge and skills for respiratory care including history, medical terms/symbols, medical/legal, infection control, vital signs, physical assessment, chest x-ray interpretation, medical gas therapy, oxygen analyzers, and humidity/aerosol therapy. Semester Hours 4 (3 lec/4 campus lab)

Provides a foundation for the development of knowledge and skills for respiratory care including lung expansion therapy, postural drainage and percussion, manual resuscitation devices, pulse oximetry, bedside spirometry, arterial sampling and blood gas analysis and interpretation. Prerequisite: RSPT 1429. Semester Hours 4 (3 lec/4 campus lab.)

Designed to develop the cognitive and psychomotor skills necessary for resuscitation of the adult. Strategies for managing and stabilizing the cardiopulmonary arrested patient will be included. The student will describe the principles, techniques, and complications of intravenous and electrical therapy, airway control, ventilation, and supplemental oxygen; and analyze cardiac dysrthymias and follow through with appropriate therapeutic intervention. Prerequisites: NONE. Semester Hours 1 (3 lab)

Preparation and presentation of the case study. Instruction in the investigation, organization, and presentation of the material, including preparation of questions for group discussion. Prerequisite: RSPT 2360. Semester Hours 2 (2 lec)

Instruction in the integration of patient examination techniques, clinical lab studies, x-ray, pulmonary function, arterial blood gases, and invasive and non-invasive hemodynamics results in patient assessment. Prerequisite: RSPT 1411. Semester Hours 2 (2 lec)

Introduces the theories and techniques involved in pulmonary function testing diagnostics with emphasis on blood gas theory and analysis, quality control, oximetry, and capnography. The student will perform and interpret basic and advanced pulmonary function testing; describe principles/concepts involved in blood gas analysis and quality control; and describe the application/troubleshooting of oximetry and capnography. Prerequisites: NONE. Semester Hours 3 (3 lec)
