A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical laboratory professional. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement are the responsibility of the College faculty. Provides clinical training in phlebotomy. Prerequisites: Admission to the College and approval by the program director. Semester Hours 1 (5 clinical hours/week)

Develops skills in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collections devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Utilizes a student laboratory for experiences in basic phlebotomy procedures. Prerequisites: Admission to the College and approval by the program director. Semester Hours 2 (1 lec/2 lab)

A brief survey of the historical development of social services. Emphasis on current needs, practices, and projected changes. Topics include psychoanalytic theories related to mental retardation, psychotherapy and children with mental retardation, and special problems faced by persons with mental retardation.
