This fi eld-based course is designed to equip the pre-service teacher with the knowledge and strategies for understanding and promoting literacy development for children in grades four to eight. Making connections between reading/language arts and the other content areas is emphasized. The course focuses on strategies and skills for reading comprehension, competence in written communication, and study and inquiry skills. A variety of assessment principles are learned as tools to plan and implement instruction and identify those students who need additional support to master the curriculum.

This course focuses on the formal and informal diagnostic assessment of disabled readers and the use of that data to plan, implement, and monitor instruction that is focused on individual children's needs. Instruction targets Reading Standards specifi c to the understanding of phonological and phonemic awareness, the alphabetic principle, literacy development and practice, word analysis and decoding, reading fl uency, reading comprehension, study skills, and assessment. Intervention strategies include the use of direct teacher instruction, games, manipulatives, and individualized plans designed to address reading defi cits identifi ed through assessment. Students also learn and apply parent-communication and conferencing skills. Each student will be required to work one-on-one with a student "camper" for one hour per week at the UMHBReading Camp during the course.

This field-based course is designed to prepare the pre-service teacher to become knowledgeable about and to implement the competencies in the state reading framework, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), and the Standards for the Teaching Profession in reading and language arts. Strong emphasis is placed on literacy development through word analysis and decoding, writing as a developmental process, and using choice pieces of literature to motivate children to read. The course focus is on direct, explicit teaching of reading and language arts including vocabulary strategies, decoding, including phonological awareness, phonics, and spelling, as well as listening and speaking, comprehension, critical thinking, and fl uency. Further emphasis is on developing fl uency through wide reading and using fully developed vocabulary to strengthen comprehension in reading and writing. Specifi c focus is on the writing process with emphasis on writing conventions, oral language, grammar, usage, and punctuation to support the literacy process.

The focus of this course is fundamental skills and knowledge for backpacking, car camping and hiking. Includes skills for camping, hiking, basic navigation, trip planning and budgeting, outdoor cooking, safety and environmental concerns. Lab fee.

The focus of this course is the analysis and development of marketing strategies for recreation, parks, tourism programs and leisure services to include an in-depth analysis of recreation feasibility plans.

Beginning ASL course consists of the fundamentals of grammar and expression. Communication skills are emphasized by studying the syntax of the language and the lexicon (vocabulary). Introduces fi nger spelling and describes its role. Develops conversational ability and culturally appropriate behaviors. No prerequisite for 1410. Laboratory fee.
