An introduction to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) General Industry Standards and an overview of the more frequently cited violations in recent years.

    Introduction to occupational therapy including the historical development and philosophy. Emphasis on the roles of the occupational therapy assistant. Topics include occupation in daily life; education and functions; occupational therapy personnel; current health care environment; and moral, legal, and ethical issues. Learning Outcomes: The student will discuss the history of occupational therapy; define and identify occupational therapy frames of reference; compare and contrast the education, roles, and functions of occupational therapy personnel; identify occupational performance areas, skills, and patients; compare occupational therapy practice areas; and demonstrate patient/practitioner interaction. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program

    Study of the biomechanics of human motion. Emphasis on the musculoskeletal system including skeletal structure, muscles and nerves, and biomechanical assessment procedures. Learning Outcome: Identify human skeletal structure by bones, boney landmarks, and muscles; analyze human motion by muscle function, innervation, and kinetics; identify normal and abnormal movement; and evaluate joint range of motion and muscle strength. Co-requisite: OTHA 1305, OTHA 1315 and OTHA 2311.

    Various occupations or activities used as therapeutic interventions in occupational therapy. Emphasis on awareness of activity demands, contexts, adapting, grading, and safe implementation of occupations or activities. Learning Outcomes: The student will identify various occupations or activities designed to enhance occupational performance; analyze the activity demands of various occupations or activities; analyze the context of various occupations or activities. Demonstrate basic safety and management of resources used for occupations or activities in treatment settings; apply the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) to occupations or activities; demonstrate basic documentation skills. Co-requisite: OTHA 1305, OTHA 2311 and OTHA 1309.

    Concepts, techniques, and assessments leading to proficiency in skills and activities used as treatment interventions in occupational therapy. Emphasizes the occupational therapy assistant's role in the OT process. Learning Outcomes: The student will discuss selected preparatory methods and how they are used to enhance occupational performance; identify indications/contraindications and precautions of selected preparatory methods; demonstrate proficiency in selected areas of the OT process. Prerequisites: OTHA 1305, OTHA 1315, OTHA 1309, and OTHA 2311; Co-requisite: OTHA 2301 and OTHA 2309.

    A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skill, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Learning Outcomes: As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts and skill involving specialized materials, tools, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social and legal systems associated with the occupation and the business/industry; and will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, and appropriate written and verbal communication skills using the terminology of the occupation and the business/industry. Prerequisites: OTHA 1305, OTHA 1315, OTHA 2311,OTHA 1309, OTHA 2301, OTHA 1419, OTHA 2309.

    Pathology and general health management of diseases and injuries across the lifespan encountered in occupational therapy treatment settings. Includes etiology, symptoms, and the client's physical and psychological reactions to disease and injury. Learning Outcomes: The student will identify the fundamental characteristics of common diseases and conditions; identify the effects of various diseases and conditions on occupational performance; discuss the contextual factors of common diseases and conditions; identify appropriate occupation-based interventions. Prerequisites: OTHA 1305, OTHA 1315, OTHA 1309 and OTHA 2311. Co-requisite: OTHA 1419 and OTHA 2309.

    Study of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology as it relates to neurological conditions commonly treated in occupation therapy. Emphasis on neuro-based occupational therapy intervention techniques. Learning Outcome: The student will identify and examine the components of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology as they relate to occupational therapy treatment; describe the pathogenesis, prognoses and management of neurological disorders commonly treated in occupational therapy and identify and generalize specific neurological principles utilized in special techniques seen in occupational therapy treatment. Prerequisites: OTHA 1305, OTHA 1315, OTHA 2311, OTHA 1309, OTHA 2301, OTHA 1419, OTHA 2309, and OTHA 1562. Co-requisites: OTHA 2335 and OTHA 2405.
