    Medical office procedures including appointment scheduling, medical records creation and maintenance, phone communications, financial processes, coding, billing, collecting, third party reimbursement, credit arrangements, and computer use in the medical office. Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate accurate and efficient scheduling of patient appointments; create, document, and maintain patient medical records; correlate accurate coding, billing, collecting, and filing of procedures; perform financial processes; and use the computer for basic office functions. Prerequisites: ITSC 1409, MDCA 1313, MDCA 1409 and/or Co-requisites: MRMT 1307 and MDCA 1443.

Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Learning Outcomes: As outlined in the learning plan, the student will apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions with and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/ industry; demonstrate legal and ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable language of the occupation and the business or industry. Prerequisites: MDCA 1321, MDCA 1443 and MRMT 1307.

    Emphasis on normal human anatomy and physiology of cells, tissues, organs, and systems with overview of common pathophysiology. Learning Outcomes: The student will identify and correlate cells, tissues, organs, and systems of the human body; differentiate normal from abnormal structure and function; and identify all body systems, their organs, and relevant pathophysiology. Co-requisite: MDCA 1313 or Approval of an Advisor.

    Emphasizes accurate ICD-9 and CPT coding of office procedures for payment/reimbursement by patient or third party. Additional topics may include managed care or medical economics. Learning Outcomes: The student will accurately code procedures performed during office visits; accurately bill patients or insurance carriers for visits/procedures; and describe and explain the differences/similarities among insurance plans. The student will accurately file third party reimbursement forms; and define HMO, PPO, Managed Care, IPA, PA healthcare delivery systems. Prerequisites: MDCA 1313 and MDCA 1409; Co-requisite: MDCA 1321.

    Procedures depicted in the Current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Includes blood collection, specimen handling, basic urinalysis, identification of normal ranges, quality assurance, and quality control. May include electrocardiography. Learning Outcomes: Demonstrate proper venipuncture and skin puncture technique; demonstrate compliance with Universal/Standard Precautions and OSHA guidelines; properly perform hematocrit and glucose with a blood glucose meter; properly label and handle all biologic specimens; perform appropriate equipment maintenance and troubleshooting; demonstrate quality assurance and quality control procedures; and, if appropriate, perform proper 12 lead electrocardiography. Prerequisites and/or Corequisites: MDCA 1313 and MDCA 1409, MDCA1305, and HPRS 1304

    This course is designed to develop specific basic skills and behaviors required of an entry level medical office employee. Content will include reception, communication, and customer service. Examples of topics are medical professionalism, patient oriented etiquette and ethics. Learning Outcomes: 1. Describe the attributes of a professional medical office assistant including professionalism, effective communication, patient relationship, office etiquette, and interpersonal skills. 2. Demonstrate appropriate techniques required of the professional medical office assistant including communication skills, telephone manners, office etiquette, and interpersonal skills. The student will also demonstrate behaviors that foster positive patient relationships.

    An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, safety, basic laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation, certification, professionalism, and ethics. Learning Outcomes: The student will demonstrate laboratory safety; perform laboratory math; and describe quality control. The student will demonstrate the use of basic laboratory equipment; and explain accreditation and certification. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Medical Lab Technician Program.
  • 2.00 Credits

    A course in coagulation theory, procedures, and practical applications. Include laboratory exercises that rely on commonly performed manual and semi-automated methods. Learning Outcomes: The student will demonstrate an understanding of all aspects of the coagulation mechanism; describe disease states associated with abnormal coagulation values; and perform basic laboratory coagulation analysis. The student will evaluate laboratory test outcomes and correlate test results with patient condition(s) and evaluate the suitability of clinical specimens. Co-requisite: MLAB 1415.
