This course is an interdisciplinary approach to the biological, chemical and physical world with an emphasis upon the diversity of living organisms, their interdependence and their relationship to physical and chemical principles and forces. The course is designed for non-science majors to develop understanding and appreciation of their world. PREREQUISITES: Acceptable placement score; or DSPR 0800 and DSPW 0800. Three lecture, two laboratory hours per week.

Students will research some of the more controversial topics of the late twentieth century and write short papers on each. Class time will largely be spent discussing these topics. Students will study methods for effective tutoring in science with practical experience in the Math and Science Laboratory, Open Review Lab, Peer Tutoring and/or Study Group Mentoring. Students will enhance their own scientific understanding and insight in a given discipline as a result of communicating what has been previously mastered. PREREQUISITES: Completion of the sequence in which the student will tutor and completer status. Student must be recommended. Five laboratory hours per week. Not intended for transfer.

The areas to be covered will include; structure of the nervous system, macro-and micro-anatomy including the upper and lower airway, the respiratory and cardiac system, circadian rhythm biology, sleep architecture and the physiology of REM.
