Topics will be selected from various areas in Speech Pathology and Audiology, including trends, methods, and other applicable approaches. SPED 216. Introduction to Exceptional Children. An introductory course to study the chatacteristics and needs of exceptional children, the competencies needed to work with special abilities and disabilities, and an overview of appropriate educational program and delivery of services. Designed for special-education students and those students who are preparing to teach individuals with disabilities. Twelve hours of preclinical experiences and five hours of service learning are required in an appropriate school or agency setting. (F,S)

SPED 218 (Formerly SPED 318). Characteristics of Learning Disabilities. 3(3,0). An introductory course to specific learning disabilities that includes the identification and characteristics, of those factors that may impinge upon effective learning. Emphasis will be placed on research, theoretical approaches, psychoevaluation, and differential diagnosis. Twenty hours of pre-clinical experience and five hours of service learning are required in an appropriate school or agency setting. Prerequisite: SPED 216. (F)

SPED 319. (Formerly SPED 324, 326). Teaching of Language Arts for the Exceptional Child. 3(3,0). This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the language arts for learning disabilities, mentally disabled and individuals with emotional disabilities. Emphasis will be placed on evaluation techniques, teaching strategies, and the development of materials for listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Prerequisites: SPED 216, 217, 218, 219.

SPED 350. Special Education Seminar. 1(1,0). This seminar is designed to assess the Special Education majors comprehension and mastery of the subject content area. A series of tests based on the SOCKET Model and other programs will be used to assess content specific pedogogy. (F,S)

SST 304. Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary Grades. 3(3,0). This course is designed to acquint prospective elementary school teachers with techniques, procedures and materials used in teaching of social studies. An attempt will be made to interpret learning theories as applied classroom situations. Current affairs will be discussed in the course in an effort to broaden the studentts' perspectives in treating problems and controversial issues. (F,S)

SST 305. Teaching Social Studies in the Middle School. 3(3,0). An undergraduate course designed to introduce pre-service middle school teachers to some of the techniques, procedures and materials that are used in the teaching of social studies in the middle school. Learning theories (applied and theoretical) will be introduced relative to their applicability to the classroom situation. In particular, the course will stress current affairs as an attempt to broaden perspectives from a multidmensional frame of reference for the devlopment of cogntive-affective skills. (F,S)

SST 500. Social Studies for Elementary School Teachers. 3(3,0). The basic purpose of this course is to enable the elementary school teacher to investigate, re-examine and develop thorough competence in the social studies that is now offered in elementary school. The subject matter of the course will be based immediately upon the materials that appear in the social studies textbooks for grades 18; however, it will be extended to include broader concepts. This is made possible through a relatively mature approach to elementary subject matter.(S)
