It emphasizes basic reading skills, assessment of reading performance materials and methods for teaching reading in the content areas. Ten hours of pre-clinical experiences are required in an appropriate school and/or agency setting. (F,S)

RED 318. Diagnostic Prescriptive Teaching of Reading (Formerly RED 416). 3(3,0)This course provides the student with a review of causes, assessment and remediation of reading problems. Assessment and remediation are applied to children/youth in the classroom. Students learn techniques and materials used in diagnosis and remediation of reading difficulties. Also, this course provides the student with an opportunity to experiment and/or conduct and in depth study of selected problems, projects or case studies in the teaching of reading. Thirty (30) hours of pre-clinical experiences are required in an appropriate school and/or agency setting. (F,S)

Emphasis is placed upon basic reading skills, methods and techniques, research application, field experiences, materials for different types of learners, and evaluation of reading program.

RED 517. Advanced Teaching of Reading in the Secondary School. 3(3,0). This course stresses a study of content and procedures in teaching reading to students in junior and senior high schools. Its purpose is to consider basic reading skills and methods in the context of the subject-matter areas in the secondary curriculum.

S 150. Fundamentals of Speech Communication/Formerly Speech 101 and 102. 3(3,0). This course in the basic principles of oral communication. It is designed to help students improve their speech proficiency, poise, and self-confidence in oral communication situations. The course will include not only a study of voice and articulation but also the techniques for analyzing, researching, preparing, and delivering speeches. A grade of at least "C"is necessary for satisfactory completion of the course. Required of all students during the first or second semester of the freshman year. (F,S)

SA 300. Cultural Immersion. (1-6 hr). This variable credit course teaches students intercultural competence and prepares them to engage in a cultural immersion trip outside the continental United States. It facilitates the cultural immersion trip and carries a fee of between $2,500 to $5,000 to cover travel and adminstrative expenses.
