A continuation of MU 310, MU 311 further investigates legalities of copyright and intellectual property, current practices in industrial structure and Internet buisness, and case studies in histories of the music business. Initial approaches to marketing, merchandising, creating buisness plans, and promotion are discussed. Significant research and library used is expected. Prerequisite: MU 310.

MU 370. History of the Recording Industry (2,0). This course is designed to trace the rise and fall of the recording industry from the early 1900s to the present-day Internet-based releasing and promotion. Important record labels, recording artists and business successes and failures are studies as they impact the recording industry and Western culture at large. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.

MU 467. Senior Recital. 0(0,0). This senior recital is a public performance given by each student seeking a baccalaureate degree in music at South Carolina State University. Each student performs on the instrument that he/she chose to study for seven semesters and in some instances eight semesters.

One semester of practical experience either in music retailing, wholesaling, or music publishing at an approved professional or art8 management firm. Prerequisite: Completion of all other course work requirements for music merchandising and management certification. (F,S)

MU 470. Artist Management. 2(2,0). This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of one-to-one management techniques as a manager of an artist. The course covers significant management and human resource practices in the music business while capitalizing upon previous coursework in marketing, press and distribution. Student learn about recording contracts, management contracts and financial flow throgh the perspective of the manager and A&R personnel. Prerequite: MU 311.
