This course focuses on systematic ways of utilizing instructional technology, from objectives to evaluation, including resources and conditions to bring about effective instruction utilizing microcomputers and electronic media. Facilitators of learning are expected to be competent consumers and producers of a variety of instructional technologies. This course is designed to assist educators and corporate trainers in developing proficiency in the application of computers and related technologies in the teaching and learning process.

EDRC 520-01. Introduction to Addition Counseling 3(3,0). This course serves as an introduction to the field of substance abuse counseling. The primary goals for the course are to deepen students understanding of substance use disorders, to facilitate the development of addiction counseling competencies that are associated with positive treatment outcomes, and to increase the student's level of confidence relative to providing substance abuse evaluation, education, education and treatment services. Emphasis will be Placed on developing and practicing substance abuse counseling skills. Students will be introduced to different theoretical models of alcohol and other drug abuse and will explore a variety of treatment approaches.

EDRC 521-01. Assessment and Treatment of Substance Abuse 3(3,0). The course is designed to provide students with an overview of alcoholism and substance use disorders. The course readings and assignments will help prepare students with the knowledge, skills an ethical sensitivity required to effectively assess and treat persons with substance use problems. Topics will include: theory and techniques of assessment and counseling approaches, techniques of counseling approached for person with substance abuse, counseling approaches with family and significant others, dynamics of counseling special populations, the role of group counseling, case management, and professional ethics.

EDRC 522. Co-Occurring Disorders. 3(3,0). Co-Occurring disorder diagnosis refers to co-occurring mental disorders and substance use disorder nor behavior addiction such as major depression with alcoholism or schizophrenia with harmful use of opioids. This course will examine how mental illness in combination with chemical dependency and/or substance abuse plus other challenges, such as homelessness, impacts individuals, families, and society. A wholistic approach (biopsychosocial/mental, physical, spiritual, emotional) will be used to identify, better understand, and address combinations of these illnesses. This course aims to give basic knowledge concerning mental dual diagnosis, including diagnostic and treatment modalities, frequent mental dual diagnosis that are co-occurring with substance use disorder.

EDRC 523. Crisis, Trauma and Disaster Recovery Counseling. 3(3,0). This course addresses and explores the effects of various types of crisis, trauma and disasters and the impact on diverse populations. Students will learn about the complicities of the recovery processes for different crisis, trauma and disasters that impact functioning, relationships, and contribute to additions and other related behaviors. This course will expose students to the various interventions, models and perspectives of crisis, trauma and disasters.

EDRC 529. Pre-Pacticum and Professional Ethics. 3(3,0). This graduate course is designed to provide theoretical and practical (clinical) instruction in counseling and ethical aspects of rehabilitation counseling. Ethical issues regarding counseling and direct rehabilitation service delivery are discussed from both a generic and multicultural perspective centered upon research-based concepts, specific skills and strategies. Direct role-playing and micro-counseling skill building exercises are employed along with case study methods and lecture formats. Students are encouraged to develop an awareness of different cultures, learned biases and how they may affect the counseling relationship.

EDRC 530-01. Practicum in Rehabilitation. 3(3,0). Supervised experience in applying basic rehabilitation counseling skills and techniques through the use of effective communication skills. Knowledge and practice is provided to develop skills in problem solving and decision-making. Laboratory experiences are provided so students may apply skills and knowledge under supervision. (F,S)
