Students of this course create conceptually driven collaborative works, learn and incorporate advanced critiquing skills, and create a professional identity (*ARTS*112 can be taken concurrently with special permission by the instructor).     (3 credits)(Prereq: ARTS*211 or ARTS*212) Portrait painting in the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of the sitter. The challenge is to express the portrait making it relevant to contemporary art and life. Paint media selection for this course is an individual choice of the student. Knowledge of the chosen paint medium is essential for successful portrait results. Technical and skill development includes anatomical studies, proportions of the face and figure, color studies, observations of skull and plaster casts and compositional strategies through direct observation of the model.     (3 credits)(Prereq: ARTS*208, THEA*149 or THEA*150, or permission of instructor) This course is an introduction to performance art through a visual arts lens. Students study ways the body is used as a material in art through the creation of individual and collaborative performance-based assignments. This course is experimental in nature and open to a range of interpretations of what is or could be "performance art". In addition to making performance art, students engage with texts, media and participate in class discussions to understand historical and contemporary perspectives on performance art. Emphasis is on clay production methods and methodologies concerning functional and vessel based traditions. Clay bodies, slips, glazes, and kiln firing technologies are examined in greater depth. Students are introduced to non-traditional and alternative processes for photographic print output within the darkroom. The course introduces technical aspects of studio lighting, image manipulation techniques, and large-format printing. The focus on research-driven slideshows is to showcase concepts within contemporary photography, including staged image-making practicces. While there are high expectations for technical prowess in this course, an equal emphasis is placed on the final concepts and ideas in the student's photographs.     (3 credits)(Prereq: ARTS*262 or permission of instructor) Exploring how images take form and are consumed, this course emphasizes the experimental nature of photography. Students learn to place their images within physical and virtual settings, providing an exploration of material use, to installation tenchiques, to publishing to web-based platforms.
