(3 credits)(Prereq: A grade of 'C' or better in MSCI*302/L or BIOL*370/L)(Coreq: MSCI*479L) This course presents a comprehensive review of the structure and function of coastal and oceanic benthic ecosystems. The relationships between primary producer and consumer form and function in benthic habitats are discussed including hydrothermal vents, seamounts, continental shelf, rocky intertidal, and nearshore and estuarine soft bottom communities. The relevance of benthic community production to ecosystem function, fisheries, and modern living resource management topics are evaluted and related to the biology of dominant fauna. (Prereq: A contract must be approved by the instructor and the Department Chair by the time of registration.) Structured undergraduate research projects conducted with the faculty direction and participation. Projects will explore marine or related problems using the scientific method. One conference and no less than five laboratory or field research hours per weekk. No more than 6 total credit hours of MSCI 398, MSCI 399, MSCI 497, MSCI 498, and MSCI 499 may be used for major credit. F,S,Su.

Elementary course in singing in which both group and individual techniques are employed. Emphasis on the study of voice production and principles of singing. Two meetings and two laboratory periods each week.

(2 credits) This course provides students with skills necessary to accuratey form sounds in the English, Italian, French, German, and Ecclesiastical Latin languages as represented by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). This benchmark assessment tool assesses student progress in music performance (primary instrument and ensembles) and keyboard, aural, and sight-reading skills prior to entering upper division courses in the teacher preparation track.
