(3)(Prereq: EDLL 314) Examines a variety and evaluation strategies that are appropriate for the classroom teacher to utilize. Although both formal and informal procedures are introduced, the main focus is on authentic, naturalistic, classroom-based strategies for assessing and evaluating children's literacy behaviors. Practicum with elementary students is required. F,S.

(3)(Prereq: Admission to the Professional Program in Teacher Education) This methods course focuses on the study of contemporary literature for children, birth through grade six, with an emphasis on selecting and integrating a wide variety of genres into the curriculum across all content areas. Instructional strategies for enhancing reading comprehension of narrative and expository text will be emphasized. F,S.

Candidates work closely with their university supervisor and cooperating teacher to assume responsibility for various aspects of the classroom, including observation, assessment, planning, and instruction. Candidates teach at least two lessons that they created in conjuction with their cooperating teacher. S

(3 credits)(Prereq: EDML*425) The final middle level practicum after admission into the middle level education program. Candidates spend a minimum of 50 hours in a public school grades 6-8 classroom. Candidates work closely with their university supervisor and cooperating teacher to assume further responsibility for observation, assessment, planning, and instruction of middle level students. Candidates teach at least two lessons that they created in conjuction with their cooperating teacher, analyze student work, and develop a unit of instruction for one of the content areas. F

(Prereq: EDUC 334)(Coreq: EDML 441) A study of the reading and writing processes and readiness to read and write as related to the teaching of academic content areas found in public middle schools. Alternative methods of instruction and evaluation of concepts and skill development are presented. A clinical field experience at a middle school site is required and included in this course. F.

(3 credits)(Admitted to Professional Program for Teacher Education) An introduction to assessment at the middle level. Students design, apply, and interpret results of measurements.
