The course focuses on the business applications of the industry. (3 credits) This course provides students with a global perspective about sport, including research and professional practice information, across diverse cultural, economic, political, and global contexts. Students are provided opportunities to examine the historical foundations of sport throughout the world from the earliest of times to the contemporary period. Topics include the Olympic/Paralympic Movement and other sport mega-events; the effects of sport development in the aftermath of the 19th and 20th century; the impacts of globalization on sport; and sport as a vehicle for globalization. (3) An application of fundamental marketing and promotion concepts to the recreation and sport industries. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between recreation and sport products and recreational and sport consumer markets. Students will utilize the analysis, strategy development, implementation, and evaluation phases of the marketing process as they pertain to recreation and sport industry segments. F,S.

This course focuses on theoretical and practical study of leading groups in outdoor recreation and education settings. Specific outdoor leadership skills are discussed, including lesson design and teaching style, expedition planning, emergency procedures, risk management, minimum impact approaches, and working with various clients. This course requires students to fully participate in extended outdoor expeditions.
