This course introduces the student to the sport management profession. Industry employment opportunities along with requisite professional skills are reviewed.

This course is focused on the study of college athletics and is designed to provide an overview of the administration of intercollegiate sports at multiple levels (NCAA, NAIA, Junior College) of competition. With the athletic administration of college sports serving as the primary focus of this course, students will also review the history of college sports, the role college sports play in society, and the future of sport on postsecondary campuses. Upon completion of this course, students will have also been provided with an overview of such topics as leadership and administration, personnel management/human resources, event and game management, marketing, fundraising, budgeting, academic support, and compliance with institution, conference, and association bylaws in addition to legal statutes and laws.

This course provides a broad outline of basic legal concepts in the context of recreation and sport at all levels, professional and amateur. As such, students will be introduced to legal structures, case law, sport-related court cases, and legal precedents. Upon completion of this course, students will have a basic understanding of the legal issues that directly impact the sport industry and will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the law as it applies to professional and amateur sports.

(Prerequisite: HRTM B201 or consent of instructor) This comprehensive course focuses on methods and procedures as they apply to the economics of sport. Areas such as cost analysis, purchasing, budgeting and what a franchise means to a municipality will be examined.
